What a feeling
And suddenly, in the space of four hours, in a room with a great group of humans, everything we have been working towards throughout 2024 made complete sense ⚡️
It was a “what a feeling moment” because it’s been a journey. And they say the best things in life are. The best things take a little bit longer, and you have to be patient. This is because the magic needs to build, and every part of the journey amounts to that single feeling you get. That feeling of, “Aha, so this is it, this is what's been happening”.
Sharing local stories
We've spoken a bit on here about entrepreneurship and what it means. The legacy of it within families and communities, what it means to us as individuals, and how it defines everything we do at stub. But time, and time again, it has proven that it is all around us. We just need to foster spaces to let it thrive 🌱
This brings us to Local Stories Through Your Lens, an initiative that ran for the past 8 weeks in collaboration with Orms and Cannon, two incredible South African brands. It’s safe to say it has been one of the most impactful initiatives we've had the pleasure of being a part of. What was it all about? It was about bringing together local photographers and local entrepreneurs, and sharing their stories with the world. Together, we celebrated their craft and highlighted the beauty of their differences 🇿🇦
The real gold
📸 Photographer Hloli who photographed Afrogrunge: Afrogrunge’s narrative unfolds against the backdrop of Cape Town’s diverse cultural tapestry, where Anita Hlazo navigated the complexities of adolescence with a keen sense of individuality. Inspired by her surroundings and driven by a yearning for representation, Anita embarked on a journey that would redefine the boundaries of fashion and identity.
📸 Photographer James Heron who photographed Simba: Simba is a local golf club refurbisher who lives in Melbostrand. He refurbishes, repairs, and restores golf clubs for a living and he’s truly passionate about it. His dad was a green keeper so golf has always been a part of him and his family's story. He feels proud to continue to contribute to the sport of golf and for Simba, making his customers happy is his number one priority.
📸 Photographer Smith Photography, who photographed his local family business, Chikomo Arts and Crafts: A thirty-year-old business that helped a family make huge moves and sacrifices to build a better life in South Africa. The Chikomo family work very hard, waking up most mornings at 5am to set up their shop and make sure they catch the morning rush. This business is so much more than a business; it encapsulates new beginnings and hope for a better tomorrow.
📸 Photographer Sasha West who photographed Ernest: Ernest, a local craftsman from the town of Knysna, sells local hand-made items that represent the diversity and creativity that is alive in South Africa. Ernest symbolizes local entrepreneurship and helps share our rich culture and talents with the world, often selling to tourists traveling on the Garden Route. We love Ernest's smile.
📸 Photographer Just Frame me who photographed Biokinetisist Wendy: A local health fanatic committed to the holistic well-being of her clients and community. Wendy has recently started her own practice at the Tygerberg Virgin Active and has over 20 years of experience in helping strengthen and train the human body. She believes that health is a mindset that anyone can achieve.
It's all around us
Entrepreneurship is everywhere. It’s alive in the local barbershop on your street or at your kid's year-end photoshoot. It breathes at the local market where you buy your bread and milk or on the beach where a granadilla lolly is definitely making you jolly. It lives in our community Christmas market or in the boxing class happening at the gym on the corner.
What a thing to be building for. What a thing you are; entrepreneurship!
